Getting started with Smart Control Resource Manager and Smart Shield

by Centurion Technologies 15. July 2011 15:22

This step-by-step tutorial will assist users in getting Smart Shield and the Smart Control Resource Manager (SCRM) downloaded, installed and ready to use.

Start with the Smart Control Resource Manager
We recommend that the SCRM be installed on a machine with the following hardware and software specifications:

  • Windows Server 2003/2008 or Windows 7/Vista/XP
  • Windows Server 2003/2008 (for large scale enterprise level installations)
  • Windows 7/Vista/XP will be adequate for environment of 500 clients or less
  • Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0
  • Minimum Hardware Specifications
  • 512 MB RAM
  • Note: The RAM can be shared with the video card or other devices – SCRM requires that 512 MB should be devoted to the operating system. We recommend at least 2 GB of RAM
  • Single Core 2 GHZ Processor
Recommended dual core 2.8 GHZ Processor
  • As the number of clients increases, so do the requirements for processing
  • 100 MB Ethernet
  • Wireless cards not recommended

Smart Control Resource Manager Installation Steps:

  • Download the SCRM installer from
    http://www.centuriontech.com/support/login_customer_resources.php
  • Be sure to download the appropriate installer for your computers
  • Run the CCInstaller2.1.X.XXX.exe
  • Type or paste in the license key that is given to you for SCRM
  • Enter in the password that you have created for the SCRM.
This password only applies to the SCRM.
Used for allowing other SCRM computers to connect, as well as importing and exporting data
If this is lost it cannot be recovered.
  • This installer does require a reboot
  • Port 25553
SCRM and clients require port 25553 be available for TCP/IP communications
Make sure all firewalls on the computers and the network allow port 25553
If using Subnets or VLAN make sure that 25553 is allowed and if need be forwarded
  • Proxy Server
If your SCRM is behind a proxy, it may require manual licensing
Locate the licensing option by right clicking the root node (“127.0.0.1”) in the SCRM user interface, then follow the instruction on the manual licensing tab.

Smart Shield Client Installation Steps:

  • If you are using the SCRM, make sure that it is installed and running first and that you know the IP address or DNS name of that server.
  • Smart Shield can be installed on Windows 7/Vista/XP Download the Smart Shield or Smart Shield Education installer from
    http://www.centuriontech.com/support login_customer_resources.php
  • Be sure to download the appropriate installer for your computers
  • It may be necessary to disable or allow Smart Shield in your antivirus software
  • Run the SmartShield2.1.X.XXX.exe or SmartShieldEducation2.1.X.XXX.exe
  • Enter in the Name or IP address of Smart Control if you are using managed licensing or the license key for stand alone
  • Choose a password. Write this down and store in a safe place – it cannot be recovered. Password is lost it will require re-image of the client to remove protection
  • Choose a keyboard and mouse unlock phrase
  • Choose default or custom install to complete the installation
  • If you receive any errors see the Trouble Shooting Section below
  • Client requires a reboot in order for the disk driver and service to be loaded
  • This may take a minute or two on the first reboot after install
  • The client should now have the Smart Shield icon in the task bar and be showing connected in the Smart Control

Trouble Shooting:

Smart Control Resource Manager:

  • Make sure that the license key has not been used to install on another server/computer.
  • Make sure that the server/computer has an active internet connection.
  • Check to make sure that the Centurion Smart Control service is started and set to Automatic.

2.1.8 SCRM License Management Enhancements

by Centurion Technologies 5. July 2011 15:22

Starting in version 2.1.8 SCRM and Smart Shield will have some enhanced features to make the Centurion License Model more user friendly. These changes will give the user more power to easily manage their licenses.

Smart Control Standalone License Key Column:

We have added a column that displays the license key for standalone licensed Smart Shield Clients. Combining this with the CSV export feature will assist you with managing standalone keys. This eliminates the need to maintain a separate document to match license keys to client machines.

Smart Control Assign Client Standalone Key:

Administrators will be able to assign standalone keys to their clients from the Smart Control. Previously this required working on each individual client machine. Using the Client Control menu select “Assign Client Standalone License” then enter the license key in the box and submit it to the client.

Smart Control Rows Warning for Client License Issues:

Rows in the Smart Control will change color to warn when licenses are approaching the end of their lease. The text in the rows will turn red when a client has not contacted the Smart Control for over 15 days.

The background color will change to yellow when the clients have not contacted the Smart Control for over 28 days.

Smart Shield Client Alert before Suspending:

The Smart Shield client will alert the user multiple times before the machine is suspended and unprotected. When the client is having trouble getting a license from the Smart Control a warning will pop up in the task bar once every fifteen minutes. If the client continues to go without a license the user will experience a red warning screen once every fifteen minutes. After a set amount of time without a license the client will go suspended.

Smart Shield Command to Clear License Key:

The command line application for Smart Shield now has a command to clear a standalone license key. This eliminates the need to uninstall and re-install with a standalone key. This may require more than one reboot in order to correct the row in the Smart Control. Also use Shift + F5 to refresh the client row in the Smart Control.

Licensing Explained

by Centurion Technologies 2. June 2011 15:30

Centurion Technologies offers two different licensing models to provide our customers with flexibility for installation and convenience for tracking the licenses. The two models offered by Centurion are Stand Alone Licenses and Smart Control Licensed.

Stand Alone Licensed

This license model is the traditional model where a license key is given out and entered during the software installation. This model is perfect for installations where there is not a Smart Control available, or where the computers often leave the network for unknown periods of time. Stand alone licenses are assigned to a machine and are available for the life of a particular machine.

Smart Control Licensed

This license model is based off the idea of a lease. When the Smart Control is installed, it retrieves client licensing information from the Centurion license server and licenses itself. Each client that connects to the Smart Control and is not stand alone licensed requests a license from the Smart Control. If there is a client license available in the license pool, then the client is granted a license on a 30 day lease. If the license pool is empty, the Smart Series client software functionality is suspended until it can acquire a valid license from the Smart Control. Smart Series Clients periodically renew their licenses during the lease, continuously renewing the lease to maintain their license.

Smart Control licensing is perfect for organizations that have large installations on a network and need to install quickly. This licensing model also supports imaging as no license key is necessary. This model also easily supports the rolling out of new equipment as the licensing resides on the Smart Control Server.

Licensing During Installation

At this screen during the installation, the choice must be made to license as a stand alone client, or through the Smart Control. Manual registration is another form of stand alone licensing.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of the licensing type chosen, Smart Series Clients can all be controlled by the Smart Control. This allows full control of your resources from one central console. Centurion is constantly working with the feedback of our customers to improve our products to better meet customer needs. If you can think of an area that Centurion needs to improve or clarify, please contact us. We want to hear from you and be the best partner your business could have!
